Precision instrumentation, medical devices, and analytical equipment demand tubing with exact dimensional control and minimal wall thickness. When space constraints, weight limitations, or fluid volume requirements dictate thin-wall construction, understanding the achievable tolerances and dimensional standards is critical to getting your specification right the first time.

### What Is Thin Wall PTFE Tubing?

Thin wall PTFE refers to tubes with wall thicknesses between 0.25mm and 1.5mm, significantly thinner than standard variants (1.5mm to 3mm+). The higher internal-to-external diameter ratio provides 30–60% weight reduction versus standard tubing, enhanced flexibility for tight routing, and minimised dead volume, critical for analytical and medical applications.

### Standard Dimensional Tolerances

| OD Range (mm) | OD Tolerance | ID Tolerance | Wall Tolerance |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1.0 – 3.0 | ±0.08mm | ±0.10mm | ±0.05mm |
| 3.0 – 6.0 | ±0.10mm | ±0.12mm | ±0.08mm |
| 6.0 – 10.0 | ±0.15mm | ±0.15mm | ±0.10mm |
| 10.0 – 16.0 | ±0.20mm | ±0.20mm | ±0.12mm |

Critical Note

OD and ID cannot both be held to minimum tolerances simultaneously. Specify OD as critical for fitting compatibility, or ID as critical for flow requirements, not both. Attempting to hold both tightly forces the manufacturer to reject more material, increasing cost and lead time without improving functional performance.

### Pressure Ratings by Size

| OD Range | Wall Thickness | Pressure at 20°C |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1–3mm OD | 0.25–0.5mm wall | 8–15 bar |
| 3–6mm OD | 0.5–0.8mm wall | 5–10 bar |
| 6–10mm OD | 0.8–1.2mm wall | 3–8 bar |
| 10–16mm OD | 1.0–1.5mm wall | 2–5 bar |

Pressure ratings decrease approximately 10% for every 50°C temperature increase above ambient. For elevated-temperature applications, apply appropriate derating factors before finalising specifications.

### Four Common Specification Mistakes

1. 1Specifying both ID and OD as absolute requirements: manufacturing cannot simultaneously control both dimensions tightly.
2. 2Ignoring temperature derating: engineers risk operating equipment beyond safe limits when pressure is calculated at ambient only.
3. 3Overlooking minimum bend radius: thin wall tubing has larger minimum bend radii relative to OD; excessive bending causes kinking and failure.
4. 4Assuming all thin wall PTFE is equivalent: quality varies significantly between manufacturers. ISO 9001:2015 certification indicates documented dimensional control.

### Primary Applications

- Medical and laboratory instrumentation: minimises dead volume in analysers and diagnostic equipment.
- Chromatography systems (HPLC, GC): minimal internal volume maintains analytical resolution.
- Pharmaceutical fluid transfer: precise volumetric delivery with minimal product waste.
- Semiconductor manufacturing: ultra-pure chemical delivery for wafer processing.
- Wire insulation: lightweight, thin sleeving for miniaturised electronic assemblies.
